Plastic Bottles To Bricks

Plastic bottles filled with plastic have been filling my office!

We were invited at a Sunningdale property information session to join the initiative in collecting to help build homes from plastic bottles. An idea that has been used in India, South America and parts of Africa.

An EcoBrick is a plastic bottle packed tightly with clean and dry, non-biodegradable waste. The plastic bottle EcoBricks are then laid down in rows like bricks and can be cemented together with clay mud or cement.

The EcoBrick is an excellent low-cost resource which has insulation properties. Making them good to build houses, water tanks, cisterns, greenhouses and more. Plus the shape of the bottle makes a beautiful design feature. A plastic bottle house of 100 square meters is built reusing 14,000 plastic bottles. And all filled with waste plastics and non-biodegradables!

How to make an EcoBrick?
– Collect your clean and dry household plastic waste. (You can EcoBrick anything non-biodegradable and dry.)
– Twist your waste and insert it into a plastic bottle. Compress it as tightly as you can with a stick.
– Keep doing this until your bottle is unsquishable. (If you can squeeze it by more than 10% with one hand you should add more waste.)
– When it is no longer squishable, it’s done!

Bulk Ecobrick makers can contact Waste-Ed directly before starting collections to be part of our bigger builds or to learn how to use the bricks for your own applications.

For your personal Ecobricks, drop off points are situated at small, local shops and organisations dotted around Cape Town and surround.
